Modelling a thread in Wings 3D
Step 1: Place a cylinder with 8 faces (it can be more but for my sanity, I'm going to stick with 8)
Step 2: Select an edge and press "G" to grab all the edges around the cylinder. Select "Cut" from the menu and type in the number == to the faces of the object.
Step 3: Go around the cylinder and connect (C) the vertices in diagonal as above until you get to the top
Step 4: Remove all the horizontal loops by selecting a column of them, pressing "L" to grab them all, and then hit delete. Right-click -> Clean up.
Step 5: Scale Axis Y to a more reasonable level
Step 6: Duplicate your original and then place one on top of the other. Use "Weld" to make them a single object and remove the horizontal loop as before.
Step 7: Repeat the above as many times as you would like, or to achieve more flights on your thread. Clean up when you're finished.
Step 8: When you have as many as you want, extrude the top and bottom of the cylinder a small amount so the next step doesn't break your object.
Step 9: Select one of your flight edges and press "L". This will follow the loop and you will see your thread highlighted. Extrude until you are happy and then autosmooth the lot.
Step 10: Add a nice metal to your object to get a nice finish, you may also try using the "S" key to subdivide the model to get a smoother edge on the flights.
Add your bolt, screw head and you're done.
