SP: Adding a Dirt Generator

Sticking with the Steam Gauge model for this as I am documenting its development from start to finish and I've just added the dial layer.

As I don't want a brand new gauge and more of a steampunk feel, that shiny white dial just doesn't fit in anymore. What I would like to do is dirty it up a little and make it look older and faded.

To do this, we need to add another layer over the top of the dial layer.

I'm not going to worry about the colour right now and I'm just going to add a black mask over the top of it. Right-click on the layer to bring up the menu as below and add the mask.

After the black-mask is added you can repeat the process on the mask itself but instead of selecting another black mask, select "Add generator"

This is what my layer menu now looks like.

In the Generator properties, I'm going to select a preset generator to use, in this case, Dirt.

I could play with all the sliders and buttons to get the perfect result, but for this, I'm not going to bother too much.

What I have now is a dirty grey layer over the top of my dial that really doesn't do what I had in mind.

Going back to my original grey layer I'm going to change up that colour to a light brown shade to see what that does for me.

It is better but still doesn't look quite right so I'm going to play with the metal slider to darken up that overlayed dirt.

After tweaking the metal and rough sliders I now have something that looks a little more used than the bright freshly printed one I started with but it's still not right.

Going back to my generator I'm going to play with the sliders a little and add a custom grunge texture to see if I can make it look a little stained.

I'm much happier with it now but if when I've added the rest of the textures I want to play around with this, I can.
